European Adventure, Day 5 – Belleau Wood, pt 2
Departing Belleau Wood…via the Scenic Route Having wrapped up our visit to Belleau Wood by late afternoon, we needed to get on the road. We still had to drive to Luxembourg for our hotel reservations. Having been in the sun most of the day and having skipped lunch, we were a bit tired and hungry. The easiest and fastest way to our hotel would have been to take the A4 highway…but there are of course no geocaches on the highway…There were some virtuals that I had identified, but we would have to take the scenic route…which is of course what we did. Pope Urban II We were taken in by…
European Adventure, Day 5 – Belleau Wood, pt 1
The Belleau Wood Pilgrimage Even with going to sleep late the night before, my wife and I were ready to tackle the day. The sun was out and it was simply beautiful. We were tempted to stay another day in France, but our hotel reservations in Luxembourg were non-refundable. We checked out of the hotel and made our way over to the American Cemetery at Belleau Wood. I previously visited the Cemetery about 20 years ago, and the conditions were polar opposite from today. Back then, it was cold, wet, and rainy. Completely miserable. Today the sun was shining with few clouds out. For the non-Marine Corps readers, visiting Belleau…
European Adventure, Day 4 – Chateau-Thierry, France
On to France, but first… While starting in Belgium, by the end of the day, we planned to be in France. A bit of a drive, but I wanted to visit a town called Chateau-Thierry (more on that later). While my wife slept though, I woke up a bit early and went for a quick walk down to an EarthCache that was nearby. Here my love of history collided with geocaching again, since the EC was near an old city gate built in the 14th century. There were a few people out, walking their dogs or going to work, but the city was quiet. Answers in hand, I looked at…
European Adventure, Day 3 – Brussels
No Driving! Day Three… Brussels. We finally get to take the day off from driving, which really means that we’ll be walking everywhere. Brussels is a huge city so we’ll only get to see a very small portion of it…and most of that will be the tourist stuff. So after breakfast, we head north towards the Grand Place. No real route in mind, just a destination. As we have in other cities, we are just heading in a general direction to see what interesting things we will find along the way. Today it included the Notre Dame de Sablon, built in the 14th century, which just happened to have a…

European Adventure, Day 2 – Belgium
Quick stop for a Virtual On our second day, we woke up refreshed after a good night’s rest. I had a quick task to take care of before we departed though. At the recent Giga in the States, I had picked up several travel bugs that wanted to travel to Europe. I was unsure how many traditional caches I would find, so I thought it prudent to take two and drop them off in the nearby cache we found last night. That task complete, we were on our way. By the end of the night, we would be in Brussels, but not via a direct route. We had some sightseeing…
European Adventure, Day 1 – Holland
My wife and I were excited to make the trip over to Europe. The initial reason to travel was to participate in a class in Amsterdam, but we decided to arrive a week early, celebrate a marriage milestone and do some travelling. As a geocacher, of course that meant a whole new continent for me to find geocaches on! This wasn’t our first time in Europe, but it was my first time there as a geocacher. In the past, geocaching has brought us to some amazing places and I expected the same in Europe. Preparation and Arrival The preparation for this trip spanned six months and we were ready. We…
From Sketch to Souvenir: the artist behind Hidden Creatures
With eight years of Geocaching HQ experience, graphic designer Roxxy is one half of the creative creatures that make up the design team here at HQ! She’s been designing souvenirs, geocoins, art, and more since 2010 and she is the artist behind the mythical beings of Hidden Creatures. We chatted with Roxxy to learn how Geocaching souvenirs come to life! Going back to the beginning, were you always interested in art growing up? Always! I can’t remember a time when I haven’t been drawing. My mom used to give me her old art supplies and a big stack of blank paper, and I’d sit on the living room floor and…
‘In Flanders Fields’ (IFF) event
In the Ascension weekend the time had come for the IFF event in Zonnebeke, Belgium. This mega was in my calendar for quite a while already and a room had been reserved in advance. My expectations were certainly satisfied: a beautiful and impressive environment and a mega-event that was perfectly organized! On Friday, we left early enough to do some geocaching beforehand. We had selected a number of multi that commemorated the battle around Passendale. A beautiful series that brought us to different cemeteries, including the largest one, Tyne Cot. Hereinafter, a visit to the menenpoort was planned to also log the virtual and the trad which were there. the…
